My passion for fishing has been with me from a very young age, something about it intrigued me from the start, the unknown, the adventure, getting out just with my mates after school, the camping and being outdoors and never two trips the same.
You can take the sport to any level and it’s always growing and evolving if you want it to. My interest grew stronger after catching Australian Bass on lures, and soon I was convincing my mum to drop me at the lake with my small boat to enter an ABT (Australian Bass Tournaments) event as my competitive side came out in me. After winning my first ABT event I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
That was over 14 years ago and today at 29 my passion for fishing and competitive Bass fishing is stronger than ever!
My dream was to one day fish against the best Bass anglers in the world in America and after 10 years of competing in Australia i am now about to head back for my 4th year in the States in my Quest to make the Bassmaster Elite Series! The road to here has not come easily and more tough times lay ahead. I’ve sacrificed everything I owned and work hard for in Australia, and years away from my family and close friends has been hard but it’s been worth the struggles – anything worthwhile always is!
I believe my willingness to learn from a young age has been a huge key to my success in the sport and it is no different today! Never thinking I know it all, I learn everyday I’m on the water, no matter who I fish with I’m always learning. I have been known throughout my career for my attention to detail with everything I do, I look into something then try to look deeper than anyone else, I want my rods, reels, lures, hooks, knots, boat, motor, electronics, everything to be prepared to the finest detail. To be different and better than what my competitors are using!
I never give up until the last cast and try not to take a backward step in life, I want to always move forward! At the end of the day I’ve learnt not to take life too seriously and just enjoy every minute. I just love to fish no matter what it’s for – if it swims I want to catch it.
My ultimate goal is to promote the sport of fishing and Australia in a good light, to get more people into fishing and encourage catch and release techniques. Even if it’s not fishing, I want to encourage people to just get out there and chase their dreams or passions no matter how hard they may seem. If you want it bad enough you can get it!
Enjoy the site and thank you for the support!
Cheers Carl Jocumsen
Hey Carl,
Love the site and what your doing in the states. Maybe you could add a video of your boat gear and general set up for each comp.

Hi Carl
After 20 years of competive angling I know exactly how you feel and my pinnacle was representing my previous
Country at a international level . The
Adrenaline rush at a tournament start is
Unexplainable and the thrill of weighing
a winning bag of fish is something to behold . I wish you all the best and may
Your fishing go from strength to strength as you test yourself against the
best.
Cheers
Julian Smith
